The property developers Shayer Group’s proposed Barracks Development includes a plan to build a 22 meter wide road through the middle of Tugulawa Park, effectively destroying it.
In 2017 Brisbane City Council conducted a sham consultation that resulted in an amendment to the Bulimba Neighbourhood plan and the inclusion of the Barracks Master Plan. The initial consultation proposed using the existing access road to the Barracks, and this plan was presented to the community. The Council then presented a Master plan that shifted the road to run though the middle of Tugulawa Park without any real consultation.
Shayer Group’s development application and the Master Plan will turn Tugulawa Park into a giant road at a time when our city desperately needs more parkland. The proposal to replace Tugulawa Park with a thin strip of almost unusable greenspace, is completely inadequate and misses the point. Public parkland should never be handed over to developers to build a road.
If this development application is successful it will set a terrible precedent for Brisbane where developers are able to acquire public parkland for roads, which will pose a threat to parkland across Brisbane.
You’re invited to a community meeting to discuss the Barracks Development and how we might organise to save Tugulawa Park.
