Labor and LNP governments continue pouring billions of dollars into costly road widening projects that worsen congestion and make getting around without a car even harder. A recent report also showed that Brisbane’s urban design is making inner-city temperatures soar as more trees and shade are replaced by concrete development. We desperately need to change the way we think about and relate to our streets and roads, so that less space is taken up by hard concrete and cars, leaving more room for trees and for people.
The Greens will change how we prioritise road space, making room for wider footpaths, more trees, and 35km of separated bike and scooter lanes. We want to build 200km of new footpath and 200 new pedestrian crossings across the city, make residential streets safer with 100 traffic-calming upgrades, and pedestrianise Albert Street, lower CBD speed limits, and bring shade and greenery to King George Square.
Instead of hot, barren, polluted dead zones, our streets could become an extension of our backyards - a place for children to play and neighbours to connect.
