West End has been waiting for a second ferry terminal since 2011 and I know many of you feel exactly the same frustration I do. Every day, residents, students, families, and workers on the southside are left without a safe, direct, car-free way to cross the river while the northside has five terminals in the same stretch where we have just two.
What makes this so infuriating is that a second West End ferry terminal is not a new idea. It was included in the South Brisbane Riverside Neighbourhood Plan back in 2011; the very same plan that approved higher density zoning and explicitly acknowledged that more residents would need more public transport options. Council took the density but never delivered the transport.
Fifteen years later, that 5.5 kilometre gap in our river crossing network remains. Tens of thousands of people who live, work, and study in West End and Woolloongabba are paying the price every single day, stuck in Montague Road traffic or simply unable to get across the river without a car.
With even more density coming through the Kurilpa Temporary Planning Instrument and the State Government's planned sale of the Visy site, we cannot afford to wait any longer. This investment is long overdue and our community has been patient enough.
I'm calling on Brisbane City Council to allocate dedicated funding in the 2026–27 Capital Budget to commence planning, design, and delivery of the Second West End Ferry Terminal immediately and to finally honour the commitment made to West End over a decade ago.
