The Raymond Park Community Garden was at risk of closure due to high lead levels in the soil and the departure of its coordinators. Thankfully local residents have come together and will be setting up a new community gardening group to breathe new life into the garden.
Moving forward Council will be removing the old garden beds to make way for the creation of new raised garden beds that do not contact the contaminated soil. The community pantry and most of the fruit trees will be retained (the papaya trees will be removed).
The new community gardening group is working on a new vision for the garden, with a new design and layout. There are lots of different roles available for anyone who wants to get involved. From organising working bees, to joining the watering schedule, or helping out with the overall coordination.
There is a WhatsApp group that is being used to coordinate within the group. If you wish to get involved, please send your name and phone number to [email protected] so you can be added to the group.
