Hampstead Road is an excessively wide local street that could be redesigned to create more greenspace and improve active travel connections without impacting traffic flow. This proposal was first raised by several community groups in The Green Space Strategy: West End, Highgate Hill and South Brisbane (2015) which followed an in depth community engagement process.
In 2024, I secured funding for Council to produce two concept designs to deliver the Hampstead Road portion of the Greenspace Strategy. These concept designs have now been delivered and I want to know what you think! The survey is open now and closes on April 15.

Concept Design: Option 1
💚 Relocate the existing one-way bicycle lanes to provide two-way cycle tracks on the western side of the corridor, separated from parked cars and vehicular traffic
💚 New priority crossings on side roads, however with a higher level of conflict compared to Option 2
💚 Kerbside parking allocation would be retained as indented parking on both sides of the corridor with some spaces removed
💚 There are no bus stops on this side of the corridor
Download the Option 1 Concept Design.
Concept Design: Option 2
💚 Deliver one-way cycle tracks within the widened road verge, separated from general traffic and parked cars
💚 New priority crossings on side roads
💚 Kerbside parking allocation would be retained as indented parking on both sides of the corridor with some spaces removed
💚 Bus stops are retained and upgraded with cycle track bypass
💚 Better connectivity to Dornoch Terrace compared to option 1

Key Benefits
✔️ Wider verge = more space for street trees, cooler microclimate
✔️ Wider verge = more space for beautification
✔️ Less bitumen = more permeable surfaces = reduced overland flow
✔️ Narrower roadway = better compliance with speed limit
✔️ Protected bike lanes = less e-scooter conflicts with pedestrians
✔️ Protected bike lanes = safer for cyclists and less conflict with cars
✔️ Safer side street crossings for pedestrians, cyclists, e-scooter users
✔️ Option 1 protection limited to western side of street.
✔️ Option 2 protection extended to both sides of the street.
Design Challenges & Opportunities
🔶 Concept Design based on “horizontal” alignment (does not account for existing services such as drains).
🔶 Dornoch Terrace intersection is unsafe. Project team recommendation for traffic lights.
🔶 Minimum acceptable bike lanes proposed (1.5m) – is this sufficient? Additional counts required and community feedback requested.
🔶 Some on-street parking loss occurs in both options.
🔶 Loading zones proposed near aged care and church. Feedback requested from these communities.
🔶 Significant kerb and channel realignment = high cost. Further design to look at staging & opportunities for cost reduction.
🔶 One-way bike lanes on both sides of the road tend to be safer for all road users – because bike riders travel in same direction as cars.
